Nikka has been sending its original whiskey to Antarctic expeditions for over half a century. In the sub-zero temperatures that can freeze eyelashes in an instant, a standard 40% ABV whiskey would freeze, necessitating a higher ABV finish. The flavor was achieved by utilizing malt from the Yoichi Distillery, resulting in a powerful, non-chill filtered whiskey. This special whiskey, designed for the expedition members facing the challenges of this harsh environment, was one of the inspirations for the development of Nikka Frontier. The high-ABV, non-chill filtered production method developed during this time is now fully utilized.
