This silky spirit was distilled in 1997, two years after Dr. Bill Lumsden joined the distillery. Driven by a desire to bring a new dimension to the world, the Whisky Creation Director began reimagining every element of the whisky-making process, envisioning a more expressive Glenmorangie. Dr. Bill had already adjusted the spirit cut—the point at which the spirit is removed from the still—to further enhance the delicate fruit aromas. Fascinated by the potential of wood finishing, he began exploring how rare wine casks could shape the whisky's flavor profile. The 1997 spirit was laid down in the finest bourbon casks, inspiring one of Dr Bill's rarest wood experiments, and after nearly a decade of meticulous maturation, some were transferred to Château Montrose red wine casks. These casks were so rare that Dr Bill was only able to secure a handful from the Bordeaux Saint-Estèphe region, and the intense hue of the wine they once contained is now reflected in the wood color of these whisky casks. Dr Bill wondered what soft red fruit notes these casks would impart to the whisky, and through a finish unlike any before or since in the distillery's history, he set about creating a Glenmorangie unlike any other. After 13 years, the single malt had developed a remarkable depth of berry flavors, and Dr Bill, delighted, conceived a complex cask marriage to maximise its unparalleled flavours. Matured entirely in bourbon casks, the whisky hints at Glenmorangie's signature citrus notes, while years of maturation in Oloroso sherry casks adds layers of sweetness and spicy delicacy, all harmoniously complemented by a selection of secret casks carefully selected by a discerning eye. Matured to perfection for 23 years, Glenmorangie Grand Vintage Malt 1997 is bursting with red fruit and candy-like sweetness, a brilliant celebration of Glenmorangie's kaleidoscopic style as vivid as Dr Bill's whisky dreams.
