Chartreuse The Herbal Elixir de la Grande Chartreuse
Product Info
In 1605, the Duke of Estre entrusted the Carthusian Order with a manuscript containing a mysterious recipe for an "elixir of longevity," composed of 130 herbs. For over a century and a half, the Carthusian monks refined this recipe, particularly through the contributions of Brother Jérôme Maubec, which in 1764 resulted in the final product, the "Plan Elixir de la Grande Chartreuse" (Grande Chartreuse Herbal Elixir). This elixir quickly became popular among the local population as a therapeutic agent, especially during the cholera crisis of 1832. Brother Charles was the first to ride down from the monastery on a donkey and sell it at the local market. Since 1764, the recipe for this elixir has remained unchanged.
