To produce this special batch of Basil Hayden Rye, we employed a time-honored but rarely used technique called "rebarreling." We first mature our traditional rye whiskey for four years, then transfer it to newly charred quarter cask casks for a further seven years. The smaller casks increase the wood contact area and allow more air to flow through the barrel, resulting in a surprisingly deep flavor profile. While the process is neither easy nor quick, blending even a small amount of this "rebarreled" spirit into our rye whiskey amplifies the whiskey's natural character, creating a profile that stands out no matter how you enjoy it.
