Woodford Reserve's barrel finishing philosophy aims to highlight the characteristics already present in complex whiskies, not to add new flavors or alter existing ones. For the 2024 Masters Collection, Master Distiller Elizabeth McCall experimented with finishing bourbon, rye, and wheat whiskies in Madeira barrels, creating a unique blend with prominent fruit flavors. Originating from the Madeira Islands off the coast of Portugal, Madeira barrels, historically used to hold fortified wines, are rich in dried fruit, spice, and nuttiness. To further enhance the flavors of the Madeira Finish whiskey, McCall blended it with a fruity Kentucky Straight Wheat Whiskey. This blend elevates the breadth of fruit and floral notes present in the wheat whiskey, creating this year's Masters Collection, "Woodford Reserve Madeira Cask Finish."
