As the distilling team explored the unique character of heritage grains, Balboa was one of the first to demonstrate the unique character these grains could impart to whiskey. The story begins with a trusted corn farmer. He had long been a keeper of this heritage grain, growing it on his farm, a popular variety in the 1940s. New Leaf saw an opportunity to transform it into a truly special whiskey. We distilled Balboa into rye whiskey, likely the first time this grain has been used in whiskey production in decades and the only example of its kind on the market today. Aged for four years at full ripeness, bottled in bond and unchilled, Balboa Rye offers sparkling, spiced fruit notes that distinguish it from its flagship rye. For years, its rich history and exceptional flavor have made it a highly anticipated release.
